I want to tone it up a little. Will this work? Thanks.
Yes….it gives you a cardio work out which is most important for losing some around the middle. Also gets those hips. It's a change to boring regular exercise.

What are the best ab exercises for someone with low back problems?

I would suggest doing pilates. It teaches you to correctly strengthen your abs and whole body without injuring your back or other areas. You could look online for pilates techniques or buy a video or book. I had lower back problems and pilates helped tons!
