I can't do anything that strains my neck such as sit-ups or crunches for at least several months.
I have found pilates to be excellent for abdominal exercises while keeping the spine stable. I broke my spine when I was 14. if you do this, try to find a small studio to provide one on one training as they can take your rehabilitation into consideration.
Other than that, lower ab exercises are a good idea and often neglected by people. You can lie on the floor with your head on a pillow and do leg raises, reverse crunches, or hold your legs up in the air and pretend you are riding a bicycle. Of course if you feel any pain in your neck, stop right away.
