What is the best way to prevent/ treat painful muscle spasms in the abdominal area during a workout?

I just recently started a diet and exercise program, and my stomach muscles seem to "bunch up" in my abs at the least amount of usage. Its like having a charley horse or leg cramp in the abs. What should I do?

Some tips:
- Don't exercise too close to eating…allow at least 1 hour of digestion
- Be sure you are hydrated, but also make sure not to have too much water right before exercising…hydrate at least 1 hour prior to exercising, then sip water as you exercise.
- Stretch- consider some yoga poses like cobra, cat, or some supine twists on the floor.
- Work your way up gradually…don't try to accomplish too much in the beginning or you will become discouraged and might give up.
