Treat your abdominals like any other muscle. People do no weights and too many reps when they do abs workouts. It is a MUSCLE. Learn to do weighted crunches and other exercises with HEAVY weights and lower reps.
If you wanted bigger biceps, would you lift 10 pounds 200 times every day, or would you lift 100 pounds or more just a few times until exhaustion once or maybe twice a week? Then why would you do hundreds of crunches every day bearing no more weight than your own bodyweight? It is bullshit.
Strengthen and build up your abdominal muscles like any other muscle (anaerobic activity - high weights until the muscle fails), then drop your body fat percentage with proper diet and cardio, and the cuts will come through like the sun breaking through clouds. YUM!
Low body fat is the number one factor in how visible your abs are. Low body fat low body fat low body fat - I can't stress it enough.
