Although I'm not overweight in the slightest, I do feel that my stomach is too large for my body, and I've been looking at ways to effectively shrink it and get back the abdominal definition I no longer have. One exercise I saw that is supposedly effective is the stomach vacuum, which basically consists of sucking in your stomach (getting your belly button as close to your back as possible) and holding it, which over time shrinks your stomach. I was just wondering if this is an effective method of reducing my stomach size. I'm also going to start eating more frequent smaller meals, increasing my cardio workouts and doing more exercises to strengthen the abdominal muscles, however if this exercise does work well then I would want to incorporate it into my daily routine as well. Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me on the subject.

(Just to clarify, this isn't a machine or anything, it's just the name of an exercise which doesn't require any equipment. You just stand up and do it, basically.)
Again just to ensure that people understand exactly what I'm asking, I'm specifically looking for effective exercises and methods to shrink the stomach. I'm not looking for exercises and diets to burn fat, I'm 6'1" and 160 lbs so my weight is not an issue, I'm in no way fat. However, I have noticed that lately I've stretched out my stomach to a larger size than it used to be, most likely from eating large portions, and I just want to specifically target that region to shrink the stomach and build up my abdominal muscles again. Thanks guys, answers have been helpful so far.
Along with normal crunches, it does work. Dont take my word for it, I am an avid weight lifter, and I research all the best tips/tricks of the trade. First of all, you wont get your washboard abs by doing this only. However, you will stimulate your abs each time you do this.
SO basically whenever you see a goodlookin person and you suck in that gut, you are actually tensing up your abs. It is something you can do that does work, but its not the optimal exercise for gut shrinking, that would be reverse crunches along with indian style crunches.
Reverse crunches are all about leg control. Lie supine (on your back) and clinch your abs, raising your legs to 45 degrees, then slowly lower down. 10 reps 3 sets will get you very noticeable results quick.
Indian style crunches are normal crunches but start out sitting indian style and then lower down, if you arent that flexible, just sit with your feet touching the undersides respectively. once again 10 reps 3 sets will get you farther than suckin in your gut….but dont be fooled….remember anything is better than nothing right? Also, streeeetch those puppies, that will lengthen and give you a more slinder appearance. Its sounds like you have the right idea though, cardio is the best way to shed those pounds (running works best).
If you arent doing torso twists…DO THEM! you wont be sorry… I do 2000 every other day!
Lastly, the "stomach vacuum" incorporates the basic rule of pilates…which is, core values. Basically with every move in pilates you are to vision your belly button touching the floormat. If you have ever done them you know they kill. Those huge guys in the gym, most wont do pilates, cuz they cant…but keep workin hard, you will get there

You smell that? It smells like BS. I have never heard of that actualy working. Now the ab lounger on the other hand, yes. Also cut out all carbonation, alcohal, bread and carbs. If you eat cheese it closes your stomach and shrinks it. Yeah, there was a study done. Don't od on the cheese though. Crunches on an excersize ball work wonders and then lay on the floor and do them with your feet on the ball at an angle and that will target your lowe abdomen.

Do not fall for gimmicks like that! That's something that will end up in one of your rooms covered in old clothes and dust and you'll be angry that you even spent money on it! It's all genetics! You cannot help it if your belly starts to show because of GENETICS! The one way to get rid of this may be Lipo suction if you can afford it!

It does help which is why the governor of CA does it, but it is not the only thing he does. Nourish your body thin, instead of starving your body fat. Good carbs like celery and carrots will never make you fat. Bad carbs like cake will, but you don't need to know the whole science of glycemic load. You need to re-learn how to eat so you can become thin and healthy. Salt has no calories but makes you fat and burning more calories does not help this fatness.
