Can I deduct the cost of vitamins, nutrition supplements, and alternative therapies from my Income Tax if…?

November 30th, 2008 -- Posted in nutrition data | 4 Comments »

…I am a professional speaker on the topic? I advocate the use of these lifestyles, therapies, and products for health, wellness, and slowing the aging process. I definitely practice what I preach. I use/do everything I recommend in my speeches. I am in my mid-50s and look (and act) much younger.

I know that I am a walking promotion for my speaking business and that my appearance and behavior validates my expertise/opinions in the audience's eyes. Therefore, I have to believe that my personal use of vitamins, supplements, and other alternative therapies should fall under the category of a business expense and be tax deductible. I am told by colleagues that this is "probably" true, but no one can give me any hard data to back up that claim.

If you agree (or disagree), can you give me the references I would need and could use if the tax deductions are ever challenged by the IRS.

Thank you for you help.

The products you "take" yourself are not deductible, since they are personal in nature. The rationale is the same for your suits and personal appearance. You need to have nice clothes and have your hair cut etc for your speaking engagements, but they aren't deductible either. You could wear that suit for something other than a speaking engagement. The supplements help you in other areas of your life, not just your professional one. However, you can deduct any supplements you use as samples or displays, that are not available for sale. If you have pills that are available for sale (inventory) they are deducted when sold.

Website that you can track your daily nutrition with?

November 30th, 2008 -- Posted in daily nutrition | 5 Comments »

Are there any websites where you can store a personal log of the nutrients/fat/etc. you have eaten in a day? Something like Joe's Goals but specifically for nutrition recording, that would tell you how much vitamin B, fat, protein, etc. you had today, yesterday, etc.

http://www.thedailyplate.com/

They have pretty complete nutrition information and its really easy to use. They also have a huge food database.

Which one has more nutrition value Whole wheat or all purpose?

November 30th, 2008 -- Posted in nutrition value | 4 Comments »

I like to know for health reasons which one is batter for day to day use. I know All purpose is good for baking etc. but I like to know which one is good for health.

whole wheat flour has more nutrients than bleached white flour but it is still not healthy. when whole wheat is processed into flour it becomes unhealthy because it is metabolized too rapidly by the body. rapidly digested carbs cause blood sugar to increase fast which in turn causes a higher amount of insulin to be released. whole wheat flour is about a 70 on the glycemic index scale jelly beans are an 80.

the easiest way to determine if a carbohydrate source is healthy or not is it's reaction in water. any carb that dissolves instantly in water will be metabolized very rapidly when exposed to digestive enzymes.

Im starting a health/nutrition website. What would you want to see on a site like this?

November 30th, 2008 -- Posted in understanding nutrition | 4 Comments »

I am starting a health/diet/nutrition/weight loss/exercise/etc website, because obesity is a growing problem in America and I want to help. I am a Biology major at Boston College and understand some of the biological aspects of nutrition and gaining fat. I have some ideas of what to put on the site, but if you were going to a website like this to try and lose weight/get in shape, what would you want? What would you want information on? Weight loss plans? Nutritional label reading guide? Incentives for losing weight? More information on metabolism and fat? Consequences of eating unhealthy food? Please give me any ideas that you have, and let me know if you think this would be a successful website.

1. Which weight loss supplements work, which don't, and why

2. Which major advertised weight loss plans work, which don't, and why

3. Shopping lists and menus/recipes for a weight loss plan that works

4. Skip the 'how to read a nutrition label' stuff. It's available everywhere.

5. Section debunking common myths

6. Exercise section with SPECIFICS. Include simple exercises (e.g., sit ups, push ups, jogging, walking) that people with ZERO equipment and/or gym access can do

7. Section addressing the dangers of eating disorders

8. A "community" section where weight-loss "buddies" can connect and encourage one another

9. "Blog" section where those using your plans can log their progress.

how is the first ammendment violated if fast food places end up being required by law to post nutrition facts?

November 30th, 2008 -- Posted in food nutrition facts | 7 Comments »

i read that by forcing the fast food places to post nutrition facts for all of their food, their first ammendment rights are being violated. how does that make sence? what part of the first ammendment is being violated?

This is the sort of argument that advocates will throw around to cloud an issue, but no, it doesn't make any sense. It may arguably be over-regulation to force fast food chain to post this info, but it isn't a free speech issue.

Why do dates from the USA and the Middle East have different nutritional value?

November 28th, 2008 -- Posted in nutrition data | 2 Comments »

I have been comparing nutritional data of dates from nutrition.gov and the nutrition data on packaging of dates (especially those from outside USA) to have different nutritional value. For example, the carbohydrate level varies from 55 gram to 72 gram, fat from 1+ g to 13 g. The calories for 100 grms varies from 260 to 390 calories.

different kinds of dates thats why

What are the daily minimum nutrition requirements?

November 28th, 2008 -- Posted in daily nutrition | 1 Comment »

Not vitamin or minerals but fat, carbs, protein, fiber, protein, etc…

It's on the back of every packaged food. It lists the percentage of the RDA, and with a little algebra you can figure it out.
