Help! Need a nutrition-based lesson plan for 1-3rd graders!?

I am in school learning to teach, and my teacher has already told us that there is "no need to reinvent the wheel", so if you can help think of a good activity plan based on nutrition, I would appreciate it! Best activity gets the gold! : )

Thank you!

I've used several of the things from this website in my classroom.

Try getting pictures of food what you think their age group would eat, and make an activity to where they can sort out whats good, and whats bad.

Hi, I teach 6, 7 and 8 year olds in England. Dont know if you can access this website from where u r but give it a go

I used the 'balanced plate' activity as whole class teaching, then had a group at a time on the computers doing it. I copied a load of google images of all different food groups and children cut and stuck them onto a paper plate to create their own balanced meal. Hope this helps. Good luck.

When I taught 1st grade I did a unit on nutrition. One of the students' favorite activities was when they each brought in several empty containers or boxes of different foods/drinks. I used a permanent marker to draw a giant food pyramid on a shower curtain. The kids had to place their containers on the shower curtain pyramid in the correct food group. I brought in some extra types of foods that I thought the kids wouldn't bring in.

Students can keep journals of the foods they eat. Using those journals they can categorize the types of food they have eaten, graph the types of food they have eaten, write about how they would make amendments to what they have already eaten to make their meals healthier and balanced.

If you have access to technology, students can use kidspiration to categorize pictures of food into the food groups.

They can create a pamphlet advocating healthy eating. In the pamphlet they can outline facts about nutrition (learned through reading/investigating),include samples of balanced meals, and explain the importance of healthy eating.

As a culminating project I had students plan a full-balanced healthy meal in small groups. I had a small class so we took a field trip to the grocery store to learn how to shop for the items we needed to make these meals. But you could just as easily make a list of needed ingredients and have parents send in donations or something like that. Then each group made their meal which was shared with parents on a special night.
