I have been running for an hour non stop at a good speed for the past 3 days. What is the weight loss benefits?

11.29.08

I wanted to know if it will help me lose weight all over and if running an hour on a track is enough or should I increase it?

An hour is more than enough. If you run too long, you risk getting burned out.

It's better to run 30-60 minutes a day for decades than for two hours a day and get burned out in a few weeks.

The immediate weight loss from running is the water loss. If you weighed in before and after running, you'll notice you'll lose a little weight.

But, losing water isn't actually getting healthier. It's just fitting into your jeans for one more day.

The long term effect is that you're strengthening your heart and lungs, keeping your metabolism up, and forcing your body to burn fat and burn your food intake.

As long as you are running off more calories than you are consuming, you should see weight loss over time.

The downside to running is that over a course of years or decades it will wear out your knees. There are other exercises like swimming, exercise bikes, and aerobic workout videos that will get your heart pumping and sweat dripping also, but it will help you save your knees.

As a final note, you might consider weightlifting also. Even though weightlifting builds muscles rather than decreasing fat, a muscular body burns food calories more efficiently than a fat body. If a muscular person and a fat person sit around playing video games all day, the muscular person's body will burn more calories because the body needs more energy to maintain those muscles.

So, you might consider adding to your lean muscle mass also. You don't have to look like Arnold Schwarzanegger, but having a tummy, arms, and thighs that are all firm to the touch is a good thing.

I hope some of this helps out.

Green tea pills and running?Weight loss & endurance?

11.27.08

if i take green tea pills before i go to practice will it help increase my endurance faster than i would without said green tea pills?

also do they help weightloss?

As far as I know, green tea helps you lose weight because it boosts your metabolism.
However, I do not believe green tea helps with endurance. It’s mainly known for being high in antioxidants.

deep water running and weight loss?

11.23.08

is deep water running as good as running on land?

You can burn as many calories in the water as on land.
You must adjust the time it is not the same as running since you are not supporting your body weight.
But you can lose weight without breaking a sweat, except on your head.

RUNNING FOR WEIGHT LOSS, Whats the best routine?

11.21.08

incline? flat? elliptical? bike? tread? fast then slow? steady? 20 min 3X a day? or 1 hour session?

well its best to get a tredmil. but if not then thats fine. elliptical and then bike and run are all good. Run as long as possible, slowly build up your time then go to miles. thats what i do and just keep increasing your time to miles. you can go at the pace thats best fits you, you want to go slow but not to slow nor to fast, just pace your self so you can go the dist.

If you start running every day, how long is it before you notice weight loss?

11.19.08

I've been running 20 minutes every day for the past week and have been eating healthy. How long will it be before I notice weight loss? Will I initially gain some "weight" from gaining muscle or not? I haven't weighed myself, I don't want to lose my motivation if I haven't lost anything…

it takes 4-6 weeks to start seeing results because these results occur from your body making adaptations to the exercise your doing and that's just how long it takes the body to adapt. once it has adapted however its important that you make your routine harder in order to continue seeing results as adaptation is counterintuitive to weight loss. add time, add frequency, add intensity, switch up the exercise in general — doing any of these will help. you might gain some muscle initially but your right to stay away from the scale. instead you might want to track progress with a measuring tape once a month to make sure you are challenging yourself enough to keep weight loss going. measure your chest, bicep, thigh, waist and hips with a tape measure. you should start to see inches coming off when you take your second measure in 4-6 weeks. remember to take your first measure now! over all the best way to tell if you've lost weight is how your clothes are fitting. don't forget to eat in the caloric range for weight loss which is 1400-1800 a day for women and 2200-2700 a day for men. choosing an exact number for yourself will require a little tampering with in the beginning. choose a value and wait a month, if you don't see results go lower by 100. however its not a good idea to go below 1400 and NEVER a good a idea to go below 1200 calories a day. best wishes. :)

Weight loss- Cardio? Running? Weights? what works best?

11.17.08

What works best to lose the weight and keep it off? NO DIET PRODUCTS, im not interested. I eat good, but i want to know what exercises will give me the best results and will stick. Even specific ones would be nice. I gain most my weight in my lower body (if that helps at all). Help! (as of right now i walk about 4 miles per day.

I believe you're the first person I've read who doesn't want to use diet products and wants to actually keep the weight off and do it safely. Kudos!

There are a few simple ways to lose/maintain weight:

Cardio for at least 30 minutes, 3-4 times a week. Cardio is the main component in losing inches around your midsection. I prefer the elliptical because it burns more calories faster, without excessive effort. However, I've also read many times, weight maintenance will be more effective if you change it up once a while, so your body doesn't get used to it and you won't see changes.

Using free weights (3-8 pounds) will also help tone your midsection, along with your arms, shoulders, back. Weight machines help too. Note that they are more likely to gain more muscle, thus leading you to gain weight (but not in fat).

If you can't get to a gym, I highly recommend Gilad or Billy Blanks. They use both cardio workouts and resistance training, usually lasting roughly an hour, so it won't take up too much time out of your schedule.

Also, you must eat healthy too. Don't completely base everything on calories. The ideal daily portion should be 60% Carbohydrates, 30% Fat, 10% Protein.

**don't base weight loss solely on the weight you lose. You can gain muscle, which in turn leads to weight gain, but you'd be losing inches. You should base your success more on your measurement than the scale**

Hope this helped!
Good luck

Is there a difference in walking vs. running when trying to loss weight?

11.15.08

I've been walking every morning with my kids for 2 weeks now for about 45 minutes daily (a 4 year old and a 2 year old). Before I started exercising I weighed 161 and now I've gained 3 pounds in a half. I've also changed my diet. I have been wondering wether running would be better in order for me to lose weight. Or what is the diffrence as far as results?

Karla,

One of my first personal training clients was an avid runner. She ran nearly every day, but never lifted weights and ate a lot of carbs - like most runners do.

I had her cut her running in half, had her lift weights three days a week and had her cut her carbs and increase protein and fat slightly.

After one month, she didn't lose an ounce. She was pissed! But you know what. When I took her waist measurement, she lost a full inch around her waist - about six pounds of pure fat.

Please don't use only your bodyweight as a success indicator. Measure your waist today. Write down the number. Then take the measurement every week at the same time, in the same place.

If you were sedentary before beginning to walk, then you start walking, guess what? You're forcing your leg muscles to do something they aren't used to. And when you do that to a muscle, it's first reaction is to grow and get stronger.

Yes. Running will be more physically taxing, but I highly recommend not running for the wear and tear on your joints. I'm sure there are a million people who will disagree.

Also, start doing some weight lifting. It will do more for your weight loss efforts than more cardio will.

Hope this helps,
Curtis

like a beginers guide to running
what are the best running shoes etc things like that
im in chicago so if you also know any trails on the south side that would be good also

Living in Chicago, if you want to lose weight by running you'll need to use a treadmill. I live in Lansing, MI and had to join a gym. Living space to small for my own. Either way start by walking and do it everyday. Stick to your diet and continue to do it daily work up to 30 minutes. As each week goes by start going faster. As you become more fit, you'll naturally feel like running. Start with just a few minutes of jogging while walking and continue this until you can run for the amount of time you desire. I was diagnosed with diabetes 242lbs, now I weigh 154lbs in one year by running, elliptical and diet. I still use diabetes meds but just a little now. Being over weight is absolutely no good for your body. It creates so many health problems. Only eat enough to keep yourself alive that's all you need. Good luck.
