i work a lot but i could make time 4-5x a week. i want to do this for fitness, to tone us and slim down. i can do it for a few days of trying to jog but then i lose motivation and stop doing it. advice pleas? thanks
Some thoughts for you:
1) get a parner. That way when one of you don't want to get going, hopefully the other will be your encouragement.
2) Get a new CD that you've been dying for. Make it that the only time you can hear it is when your working out. Oh, make sure it's really upbeat!
3) Look for someone who cares about your health and ask them if they would be your accountability person. Hopefully, someone who won't yell at you, but encourage you when you falter.
4) Read alot about jogging and health. The internet is a great way to get encouraging reading material.
Hope these help

Does anyone know if I can sucessfully lose 10 lbs with running (4 miles a week)and minor weight lifting alone. I am trying this out over the next month. I am not making any major changes to my diet. I am planning to cut back(by eating smaller portions) not soda, sweets at a bare minimum, and drinking alot of water.
Do I have a chance of losing 10lbs in one month? What do you think? Other suggestions welcomed
Yes I do think this is possible to do if you stick to an okay diet and run…the more running the better though..but they do say not to lose to much weight each week so be careful!

I live in one of the sunniest places in the U.S., and I really want to run and lose some weight, but I pass out so easily! I also happen to live in one of the highest crime-rated cities! I really don't want to go out at 5 am by myself because it's the only cool time of the day! Any suggestions?
Tolerance to heat while exercising is partly genetic, and partly trainable. Your body size and shape has a lot to do with how well you adapt. If you work out in the heat, you will find that over time it affects you less.
Some suggestions:
1. Be sure to take on enough fluids before, during, and after. Weigh yourself before and after. If you're lighter after a workout, its not because you burned fat, its because you lost fluid. Take on more next time out. Gatorade or other fluid replacement drink is better than water because it is absorbed through the intestinal wall faster. I sweat as much as 2 liters per hour in warm weather.
2. Learn the symptoms of heat exhaustion/heat stroke, and be alert for them. Don't try to gut it out if you're starting to feel lightheaded, or cramp up. When it gets to that point, its game over, get to shade and water.
3. Don't forget the sunscreen

I usually run 5 times a week for an hour each time, and I'm wondering whether I could replace my runs with having a game of squash or tennis? If I were to play a sport 5 times a week versus running 5 times a week, what effects/differences on weight loss would there be? Would I stop losing weight if I stopped running as much?
I probably know the answer to this question but I'm getting bored of running..
squash is a great workout. I'd try and mix and match, keep some of the running, try some new sports to keep yourself interested.
mix up the running training too, do intervals, fartlek, short fast runs etc.

Hi,
I am needing to loose about 60 pounds and would like to do this through diet and exercise, specifically running. I have found a program that set specific time goals of running/walking to help you work up to running long distances, and would like to know if anyone has done this type of thing before? What distance would you recommend working up to in order to maintain weight loss?
Thanks a bunch!
You are on a smart plan by using walking to build up to running. Most people get discouraged with running by trying to do way too much before they are physically ready.
If you can build up a program that lasts 60 minutes per day - and it can be a combination of walking/running - or, when you can run that long, maybe alternate days of each, then you will on a major path to fitness.
Distance is sometimes not the best measure, though you will find as you progress that certain courses will be run/walked in about the same time each workout.
Right now, build through walking, add elements of running, the goal is to run an hour & then you'll have so many options based on only walking or running - or using a combination of the two - for those 60 minutes.

Would running 3 miles a day (followed by a healthy diet) every day of the week help with weight loss? Is 3 miles enough or should I aim for more?
Thanks!
YES, it would. Running is a GREAT aerobic/cardio workout! That plus a healthy diet is the best way to lose weight. One warning though - it's not recommended to exercise every day of the week, it's not good for your body. You should give yourself one or two days off per week.
And three miles is a good distance too. It's not so long as to be impractical for every day life but it's not so short that you've barely started before you're finished.
Remember, for it to be an areobic workout you have to be able to breath! Breathing is THE most important part of running. Taking long deep breaths will help prevent getting a stitch in your side. Also, run fast enough to be working hard but don't run so fast that you can't do the three miles.

i normally run for 10 minutes everyday at vigorous pace and do other cardio such as boxing but i havnt seen any weight loss whatsoever i think i actually gained weight
well im no expert but….u dnt rlly loose a ton of weight with just running…u have to have a good diet also. coach tells me to run atleast 2 miles everyday…atleast 5-6 times a week. i think when u run faster its 2 help u with speed & if u wanna lose weight by running, start at a nice & stedy pace so that u can run for longer periods of time. therefore, u will lose weight.—maybe—ima gurl so im not sure if gurls lose weight faster than guys. bt if u wanna get fit…not just skinnier, u should try lifting weights! its fun nd u should do it regularly! if u need help with working out u should try military.com … they have lots of advise on how to shed the pounds & get as fit as u want, if ur willing 2 stick with sum of the routines they have.
: )
however…if u do exersice–then u probably gained those extra pounds of muscle…not fat.
muscle weighs more than fat so, just hope thats the case.

bt also dnt go run for half-an-hour, do a couple of sets on the bench nd then go eat a big mac with large fries!

im 14 turning 15 i weigh 210lbs. im going to start running how much should i be running a day and at what time of day? i want to be around 160lbs by the end of the summer. if you have any good diet tips for me please tell me. i also did football for a year lost some weight but gained it back. need some TIPS!
Start your day jogging for 30 min. If you are serious about losing 50 lbs in one summer that is a hefty goal. This isn't very realistic. In order to lose a lot of weight though you will need to cut out ALL junk food/saturated fats/and most sugars. Run 3-4 days for 30 min a day. Try running for 45 min on Sat. and take Sundays off. Watch calories, but if you are working out a lot you will need to eat plenty just eat healthy. Good Luck and be smart about your weightloss. Don't worry so much about losing all the weight worry more about feeling good about yourself and becoming stronger.

I am fat and recently decided maybe i should start running, being overweight will it hurt or help me?
Running will help anyone become more fit. The trick is working a training program that will keep you motivated and help you.
DON'T do the run 1 minute/walk 1 minute/repeat. That's a bad session that won't allow your body to get into a rhythm of exercise.
Here's what you do. Go on google.com. Look up "pedometer." Find your house and, using the mapping tool, make a two mile route that ends at your door step. Get some shoes on and go slowly jog it. You should be moving faster then a walk but you're not all-out running. It'll talk 20-30 minutes. Afterwards, if you decided you weren't going to die, go to a running store (Stay away from Footlocker) and buy some running shoes. If you invest cash, you might stay with it longer.
Running is a great cardio exercise that burns a lot of calories. It will NEVER hurt you, unless you run with injuries.
Good luck!

I'm watching what I eat and following a low carb diet. However, exercise is also necessary for weight loss.
I can do either exercise, I'm just wondering which is more effective to lose weight and keep it off.
Bicycling is better, because you see more country than running in a given period of time, thus keeping it more interesting. Also, you can commute to work by bicycle in a reasonable amount of time unlike running.
