Will running sprints help me lose weight?

01.18.09

I want to lose about 30 pounds adn Ive been running for about 9 months and i haven't lost that much weight, i feel healthier and ive lost about 10 pounds but i dont feel like im getting much of a workout. So lately ive been doing sprints and my legs and stomach are extremely sore, I was just wondering will doing sprints help me lose more weight.

I also eat mostly fruits, vegetables, and lean meat. No bread or candy either.

Sprints are in the catagory "high intensity training," or HIT, to use the ever popular acronym. You can burn way more calories in a much shorter time using this method. There are even a few machines that are supposed to do HIT training on your whole body, giving you a full workout in like 3 minutes. The great thing about sprints and high intensity exercise is that it's just cool. You not only loose weight, you develop your psyche…it's all about how hard you can push yourself. You could do it with dance or martial arts too. You will get stronger, shapelier, and cooler. Of course, if you develop muscle, you may look thinner and better without necessarily loosing weight.

yes, sprints are superior to steady state cardio because they'll continue to burn calories even after you're done. anytime you find yourself breathing harder, sweating more, and just overall being challenged, you know it's spending more energy. not to mention it's not as boring!

Running sprints uses glycogen and is less effective than slow running. If you want to work out entirely using fat as fuel, you need to jog slowly (you should be able to talk to another person) for about 45 minutes.
