Weight Loss/ Running?
01.20.09
Well I will shamfully say that I went from an 6-4 215 athlete, to 6-4 300 pound slob in 4 years. I hate it, and please dont put anything mean on here I want and I am ready to change. I need help though, I have not even been near a gym in a year and a half, and have not ran at all in a long time. I recently started changing my diet and cut out the soda and started eating more fruits and veggies. I lost 10 pounds in 2 weeks. I want to start running and my question is, is it safe to run at my weight? I was used to running several miles at a time 4 years ago, would it be safe to even try a mile right of the bat? Again, please dont be mean, I dont need that, I am trying hard now. By the way I am 24. Thanks for all the help!!
i would start out by walking and then jogging or using the elliptical at the gym. then after you can do a good work out effectively you should start running and could probably get your endurance up quite a bit.

Its great you are making the effort but I would definitely start gentle, if you get an injury or get really tired/sick trying to run a mile off the bat it might put you off. What I do when I haven't run in awhile is run 5 mins walk 5 mins run 5 mins and slowly build it up til you are running more than walking.
Try using the plan in link below
Good luck!

I would start out by using the elliptical machine at the gym. I personally love it and it is better on your knees then the treadmill. I do not think that you should start out running, but at the same time being that you have been out of the gym for so long you probably wont be able to start out at a run. When I got back in the gym after being out for about a year I started ont the elliptical machine and loved it because it kept my knees from aching, but gave me a better work out then the treadmill as well.

Oh Turk you are in luck! You are young enough to bounce right back into shape! You should run, keep it at a slow pace and a reasonable distance but start with 1/2 mile, and time yourself, then keep up the 1/2 mile until you can safety run it at a pace you are happy with IE like 4 mins. Then increase until you are at 1 mile and stay there till you are at a good pace, IE 8 mins. then add 1/2 mile increments until you reach a goal, like say 3-5 miles without stopping in 20-25 minutes. Then you know you are in shape. Your metabolism has slowed down because you aren't a kid anymore and there will be no more 3am pizza and beer binges, but healthy living and moderate excersise and you should be down to 225-235 which is a good weight for you by June, sooner if you put your mind to it. I wish I was young again! God Bless

First off congrats that you want to get back to your original ways/weight. So healthy to be that way!
I would say don't start running yet, start walking (esp up hills) and at a faster pace, After one-two weeks of this, add bursts of 30 second running every 3-5 minute, then the week after that up it to 1 minutes, 1:30 after that. slowly progress. and while adding running to this, lengthen your amount of running/walking also. Start with a mile, then go up from there. I would say in 2 months you should be able to run again. Remember to stretch afterwards every time also!
